Nafplion, the first capital of the newly independεnt state of Greece is a beautiful city with narrow picturesque streets and traditional architecture. The The history of this city goes back many thousands of years... to the union of Poseidon and Amymoni - Palamidi was born who was later to become the founder of the city and whose son represented the city during the Trojan Wars. This is where the name comes from for the castle towering above Nafplion.. the historic Palamidi. The Palamidi was built roughly about 300 years ago during the Venetian domination along with other fortifications such as Acronafplia, Bourtzi and others, a basic historical piece of the city adds to the view from the properties balconies and it is ... an element of natural decor to the region.
Close to Nafplion (12 kms) is Argos, the first organised city in the world and Mycenae (25 kms), the cradle of Mycenaen culture with its world reknowned history history of Agamemnon, Clytaminestra, Ifigenia and then Epidavros (30kms) with its ancient theatre and Asklepio. The history of Nafplion and surrounding areas continues throughout the Byzantine era, the Ottoman domination, the liberation with Kolotroni and other heroes when it becomes the first capital of the newly liberated Greece. With the murder of its first governor Kapodistrias, the Barbarian Othon, the first king of the Greeks arrived at the harbour of Nafplion and after a few years moved the capital of Greece to Athens (120kms).
The history of this city canoot be exhausted in these few words... the visitors and "new" permanent residents are impressed and enthusiastic when they discover pieces of history in every nook and cranny. The history goes together with the unrivalled natural beauty of the place with its lacey coastlines, the magical sunsets and wonderful beaches to visits .....swimming, the intense lifestyle, day and night, the heat and hospitality offered to those choosing to become one of its citizens. In the last few years the city has developed and become the "in" place of Athenians (160kms - just 1 hours journey) and others.. from different cities for weekends and holidays all year round adding a cosmopolitan feel and... lively character. The Argolida is a county south east of Athens, on the Peloponnese peninsula, with a lot of the inhabitants making their living by agriculture and tourism. The wonderful beaches, great climate and mild winters coupled with the easy access from Athens make the Argolida a destination favoured by many during the Summer months particularly, but, also during the off season because of its rich history and amazing archaeological sites. The schools found in and around Nafplio are of a high standard and the health care second to none, also making it an attractive option for people looking to move to the area. There are residents from many European countries as well as from other areas of Greece, finding that Nafplio and the Argolida more generally gives them a better quality of life. The predominant agriculture of the area is oranges, mandarins, clementines,olives, pistachios and artichokes and the aroma of orange blossom hangs heavy in the air during the spring months. At Christmas the oranges and mandarins pepper the trees like fairy lights and during the first months of the year a hive of activity as they are harvested.
The historic sites of Epidavros Theatre, Mycenae and Ancient Tiryns attract visitors all year round and groups come from all over the world to visit them. Further afield, in the Peloponnese, one may easily visit and return from Ancient Olympia, Monemvasia, Byzantine Mystra, Diros caves, Kalavrita, the Arcadian villages, Ancient Corinth, Acrocorinth, Ancient Nemea (the modern town of Nemea is also a large wine producing area exporting worldwide) and the high mountain ranges of Taygetos and Ziria where skiing is available in the Winter, within a day.
